RACHEL'S ANGELS PROJECT - Growing Tomorrow

Written by

Growing TomorrowThe Rachel's Angels mentorship programme began in 2007 in association with Stellenbosch University. The programme is about improving the academic abilities of grade 11 and Grade 12 learners and improving their life skills. Ultimately Rachel's Angels is about improving excellence in high school education in the Western Cape.

The Rachel's Angels empowerment project aims to contribute towards the building of excellence in high school education in the Western Cape. The programme includes regular campus visits, attending lectures and exposure to the world of business in the form of an entrepreneurial day, where learners are required to develop business plans and run a small business. Through this process – experiential learning, mentoring by peers, exposure to academic life and the realities of the business world – students and learners are taught skills that will adequately equip them to play a meaningful role in society.

Our Vision

The Media24 Rachel's Angels Empowerment Trust is recognised by stakeholders as an entity that makes a measurable contribution to excellence in secondary school education in the Western Cape.

Our Mission

Through an effective mentorship programme for Grade 11 and 12 learners, we contribute to the holistic development of the participating learners and students. Our programme enables Grade 12 learners to deal effectively with post-matric challenges. It enables them to make a constructive contribution to the South African economy and society at large.

A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCE - TheMediaOnline

A WOMAN OF SUBSTANCEA woman of substance

Professor Rachel Jafta literally took a big leap on her birthday last year. She jumped off Lion's Head in Cape Town, in tandem with a champion paraglider. She screamed, yes, but her main thought was, "If something happens to me, I hope our newspapers get the story first".

The chairperson of Media24's board says she isn't an adrenaline junkie, nor is she afraid of heights – "except I wouldn't bungee jump off the Storms River Bridge because I'm scared it will shoot up like a catapult and my eyes will pop out" – but she does like to try new things. She says she's a 'pank' – "professional aunt no kids... don't you love that word?". With a host of nieces and nephews to keep her "grounded", she enjoys learning dance moves, practising karate chops, and being dragged off to the Da Vinci Genius Exhibition at the Waterfront as much as she does pondering the future of publishing in South Africa and attending the latest Verdi opera at Artscape.
